SMALL GROUP RESOURCES FOR FACILIATORS

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A FACILITATOR AND/OR STARTING A SMALL GROUP, THE SMALL GROUP COMMITTEE Would LIKE to help you take SOME SIMPLE STEPS.  BUILDING NEW GROUPS ARE ALWAYS A WIN!   EMAIL THE SMALL GROUP COMMITTEE AT SMALLGROUPS@HOLYEUCHARIST.ORG for MORE INFORMATION

GENERAL DISCUSSION GUIDELINES (THIS DOCUMENT SHOULD BE USED WITH MEMBERS DURING YOUR FIRST MEETING)

SMALL GROUP FACILITATOR GUIDELINES

THE STRUCTURE AND FLOW OF SESSION (THE GROUPS FIRST SESSION and THE ONGOING SESSION TIMELINE)

All of these resources are general suggestions.   Each group is unique and what works for one, may not work for all.  If you ever have any questions or feedback on these resources, please email smallgroups@holyeucharist.org

5 REASONS WHY SMALL GROUPS ARE VITAL FOR GROWING IN OUR FAITH

1. CREATES FRIENDSHIP AMONG THE BODY OF CHRIST: Believers are brother and sisters in Christ. When Jesus was asked about his family, he said, “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister” (Matthew 12:46-50).

We are adopted, through Jesus, as children of God (John 1:12; Galatians 4:5-7). Therefore, fellow believers are family in Christ. If we’re already family, shouldn’t we find ways to become better friends? After all, we’re going to inherit eternal life together.

Small groups have the ability to create friendships and help us connect – we are one with Christ.

2. BRINGS FELLOWSHIP WITHIN THE BODY OF BELIEVERS: The fellowship we see in Scripture meant something close and more sincere.

The early church devoted themselves to fellowship with one another (Acts 2:42). They used the Greek word koinonia (coin-o-nia), which means ‘association, communion, or close relationship.’ This communion wasn’t just for an hour – it overflows into our daily lives. Small groups offer the ability to harness that authentic fellowship – where, like coming together for communion on the weekend, can be as sincere and reflective in your Small Group gatherings.

3. INSPIRES GROWTH IN DISCIPLESHIP: Jesus’ main goal for us is to become disciples. He was pretty clear:

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20

The main command isn’t ‘go,’ but rather, ‘make disciples.’ Yes, we need to ‘go’ in order to do that, but the focus is on multiplying ourselves so that others can hear and experience the Good News of the gospel through us. A small group has the ability to provide that disciple-building environment. We can’t simply go to Mass once a week, and easily become a disciple out in our daily lives. We need to strategically use the other 167 hours we have each week as well. We sleep for 56 hours, we work for another 56, and have another 56 to use wisely. If we commit ourselves to a small group, we will actually become better equipped to multiply ourselves in whatever context we find ourselves in.

4. PROVIDES A COMMUNITY FOR MEMBER CARE: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). We need each other in order to learn and grow, and community actually has the ability to make us stronger.

Hebrews 10: 24-25 has us consider how we may “spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

We are often quick to conclude that we can engage in discipleship and spiritual growth on our own. While personal devotions and prayer are important, we also must engage in spiritual community if we want to mature spiritually. In addition, Small Groups are where the larger church becomes smaller and provide member care. Our Pastor, Father McClane is one person, and he cannot recognize and meet every a need in the community; therefore, relational structures like small groups, are an integral part of "being" the Church and not just "going to" church.

5. ENCOURAGES A HEALTHY ATMOSPHERE FOR ACCOUNTABILITY: Scripture teaches us we need accountability in two ways:

• We need to be accountable to God; and,

• We need to be respectfully accountable to each other.

Accountable to God: In order to grow in the spiritual life, we have to become more and more honest with ourselves about the sin in our lives. Only then can we experience the love and mercy of God and the saving power of Jesus Christ. This level of honesty can make us vulnerable, but it provides the required environment for growth.

Accountable to each other: While Scripture teaches us not to judge one another, because that’s ultimately God’s role (Romans 14:10-13), that doesn’t mean we avoid holding each other to account. To be clear, we mean ‘humble, grace-filled, and respectful’ accountability. It means that we have to follow the teachings of Scripture and the Church and identify and deal with our own sin before thinking about helping someone else with theirs (Matthew 7:1-5). Only in this environment can we experience healthy accountability and grow together in love and respect. This beautiful atmosphere can be found in a small group.

If you are new to Small Groups, we encourage you to enjoy one of our Small Group Connection Experiences scheduled for the Fall and Spring Session where you can hear about our Small Groups and even get connected to one if you like what you see.

OUR NEXT SMALL GROUP CONNECTION EXPERIENCE HAS NOT BEEN SCHEDULED YET

In Small Groups, we grow in fellowship and relationship with one another, God, and in ways we cannot grow on our own. We were created for community! Small Groups are where our big church gets small. Groups are usually 6-12 people who meet weekly to discuss faith, go deeper in Scripture readings and support one another in their relationship with Christ.    In our Small Groups we challenge each other to pray,  be authentic and be committed to grow in our faith in our everyday lives. It is through our passion, energy and enthusiasm that generations upon generations will come to know, love and serve Jesus Christ.

JINGLE JAM - A KIDS PROGRAM ON CHRISTMAS EVE

Q & A

Jingle Jam is our kids program designed for kids in grades K to 5 that is offered on Christmas Eve at the 2pm and 4pm Masses. Like a traditional Children’s Word program, the kids that attend Jingle Jam are engaged in the program from the beginning of Mass through the end of the homily. Jingle Jam incorporates skits, games, songs and a video all designed to communicate the story of the birth of Christ in a fun, engaging and relevant way.

So what does Jingle Jam look like on Christmas Eve?

Before the beginning of Mass, our Station Leaders hand out wristbands to all of the children in their assigned color section (The section parents/guardians choose to sit in during Mass). This way, our kids are organized as they leave for Jingle Jam and stay together through the program. Just before the start of Mass, the kids are dismissed to leave section by section with their assigned Worship Leader. Hall Monitors are stationed throughout the Church to keep our kids safe during the transition to Hoffman Hall. Jingle Jam takes place in Hoffman Hall where the kids walk into fun, high energy music and an incredible scene on the stage where the program begins. After the program (after the Homily during Mass), the kids are dismissed by section and returned to you in the Church or Atrium where the family experiences the rest of Mass. No sign up is required for this awesome experience.

What if I have a child younger than Kindergarten?

You are most welcome to attend the program with your preschooler.

Want to help out? You can sign up …We will train you in your role…you just bring your smile.

WATCH THE FULL MASS FROM LAST SUNDAY

calling new ministers for these New Ministries

We are aiming to come out stronger after this crisis, and with that new areas of needs are being fulfilled.  Take a look at the growing ministries that have developed because of this crisis.  Please email hec@holyeucharist.org with the ministry you're interested in and we will be in contact

  • Prayer ministry

Prayer is a powerful tool. In the First Letter to the Thessalonians, St. Paul teaches us to “pray without ceasing." Prayer is not just good but necessary for us. Sometimes in our lives, like now, prayer is all we can do. Therefore, we saw that developing a Prayer Ministry at Holy Eucharist was vital for our community. It is a grace to pray for the intentions of the community. Join us! In this ministry, the committed minister will be given intentions on Monday to pray over for the week. To get you started, we will provide a simple Prayer Ministry orientation. Email hec@holyeucharist.org to show your interest.

  • ONLINE Host Ministry

As we extend our outreach through the ONLINE experience of the Mass, we are growing our online Host ministry especially since we are looking to continue with livestreaming Mass after we are back in the Church building. Online Hosts are an important presence because they help set the tone for the conversation and help connect with those who attend the Mass online. Just as Greeters at the door of our Church are vital because they are the first smiling face for our visitors, Online Hosts are often the first welcome visitors “see” and bring good, positive energy during the Mass. This energy reminds us that we are worshiping as a community through our online chat. Join us in this awesome ministry! We will provide a simple Online Host Ministry orientation to get you started. Email hec@holyeucharist.org to show your interest.

  • tech team ministry - live streaming

Livestreaming our Mass online has been a goal that we have had and this crisis has brought that need deeper into focus. When we are able to return to Mass in our church building, this ministry will still have major impact on growing disciples. It is our goal to keep the Mass online as an option to those who are physically unable to attend Mass, those who would like to experience Mass while on vacation to keep the community connection, and for our visitors who are looking at us from afar for the first time and slowly working their way into our physical doors. This online presence is vital to our mission. While this ministry is still in the beginning stages, you may have experience or knowledge you can bring to the table. Join us as we dream what this can look like. Email hec@holyeucharist.org to show your interest.
